Not going to happen

The good news is that I received email from the hiring manager. The bad news is that he requested more time for making a decision. That tells me that there was at least one negative opinion (and I would imagine two to have an impact) about me during the interview process.

Anyways things happen for a reason. I can think back to W's interview with Amgen in LA. She was hopeful about getting the job. If she had, it would have meant that we move to SoCal. Amgen didn't even bother sending her a reply and she was so dissappointed. Looking back, it was a good thing it did not work out. She is much happier where she is now and we didn't have to move out of the Bay Area.

They sent me email today and asked for permission to do a background check. I am being pessimistic here, but I remember Amgen did the same to W and then didn't even bother to tell her what their final decision was. It ain't over until its over.

Well they sent me email and asked me to call back. I called expecting them to say that they had decided against hiring me. Instead the HR person called to verify my salary requirements. I didn't really budge from what I had asked for. If they had offered me less, I would have still taken it given that I really like the job. But you only have negotiating power before you join. And I was determined to use it to my advantage. You feel a little mercenary donning this attitude but it is the rockbed of capitalism and I guess one has to just suck up to it and feel comfortable doing it. Well, I still need to hear back from them in writing before I know for sure that this is a done deal

We have agreed on a number after some haggling. Has to be approved by finance and until then nothing is certain.

That thing about negative comments - apparently there were none. That was just me being pessimistic.
